Catalina Giraldo

I am Biologist from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá and Visual Artist with a Master in Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Digital Arts & New Media from University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Media Design and Communication from Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. As both Artist and Biologist, I have been experimenting with photography and film of nature and human cultures, 3D animation, video installation, mapping projection and live plant installations using native species. My interest has been visualizing past, present, and future ecosystems.  I believe that visualizing ecosystems from past and present we can dream future realities,  where humans live in a more balanced manner on Planet Earth if we become aware of how we have transformed negatively the Earth and our responsibility as human species of recover the lost balance.

As Biologist, I have worked with different interdisciplinary research teams, in wildlife conservation, ecosystems restoration, botany, palynology  (pollen taxonomy), and paleoecology (reconstruction of past ecosystems based in pollen fossil). These experiences allowed me to gain an understanding about landscapes, ecosystems, plants and climate change in the past times, especially for the Amazon and Andean ecosystems in Colombia. That's why my philosophy of life is to contribute with the Art to environmental awareness and to plant seeds of consciousness to treat our planet with love and respect.
